Albania and Montenegro 1839, a setting of beauty and desolation. A land where centuries of bitter hatreds, atrocities and merciless in-fighting endlessly repeat themselves.

Enter the Pfiffmaklers, a group of travelling entertainers, on their way to visit the Black Madonna of Montenegro when they stumble across the remnants of a massacre.

Only one survivor remains. With some grumbling, they take the girl in. A decision which will put all their lives in danger, because those old hatreds are still out there and are about to swirl down from the desolate mountains and sweep them off their feet.

THE FIFTH FACE OF FEAR

A fog-bound village on the farthest edge of Germany.

Out of the mist comes a fugitive. He is the Anatomist’s Dream, and Metternich has placed a very large bounty on his very large head for his part in the revolutions of 1848.

He is taken in by the Pfiffmaklers, a travelling theatre troupe, and borne over the water to Rugen Island, where old pagan beliefs cling on, & the statue of Svetovid has been built into the foundations of their church.

Unknown to any of them, an escapee from the bleak walls of Kragujevac Prison in Serbia is on their trail, and will stop at nothing to get his hands on Metternich’s reward
